Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT DO YOU LEARN IN YOUR MUSIC LESSONS?
That question is often asked by prospective students. Our teachers make it a priority to get to know you on a personal level and to become familiar with your personal musical needs and goals.
We do not treat every student the same in terms of what and how we teach.
A seven year old having their first guitar lesson will have very different needs than a fifty seven year old taking up piano for the 2nd time after having had lessons as a child.
The main reason to choose the Academy as your music lesson provider, is that we are sensitive to the fact that every student is an individual.
If you enroll here for lessons, we will work with you to make a plan that will fit your needs and musical preferences. At the first lesson your teacher will ask you about your favorite type of music, and set goals to help accomplish whatever musical aspirations you have for yourself or your child.
WHAT STYLES OF MUSIC DO YOU TEACH?
We teach all styles from classical to rock, pop, jazz, country, and blues.
ARE YOUR INSTRUCTORS QUALIFIED?
Our teachers have received their education from prestigious institutions such as University of California at Berkeley, Berklee College of Music, Music For The Media, and University of California at Los Angeles. Many of our instructors have gone on performance tours of the US and Europe and have over 25 years of professional performance and teaching experience. In addition to their teaching credentials, our teachers have warm personalities, are extremely friendly and strive to get to know each student and their parent on a personal level.
(for ages five and up)
Our piano teachers teach a variety of styles from classical to popular music. Whether you want to learn Bach or Alicia Keys, our teachers are happy to help you become the pianist you want to be. Our piano faculty will show you the fundamentals of sight reading, technique and theory, but they will also incorporate your favorite songs into your lessons. You do not have to have a piano at home to take lessons. A simple full size electronic keyboard will suffice for the first 6 months. Our piano teachers have warm personalities and enjoy sharing their love for the piano with you.
(for ages six and up)
Our voice teachers primarily focus on popular music. If you have always wanted to be a better rock, pop, country, jazz, folk, gospel, musical theater or R&B singer -- or if you just want to sing better in your Church choir -- then we have the right voice teachers for you. Voice students spend time each week doing physical exercises to improve their vocal range, ear training, breath control, vibrato, tone production, enunciation and more. All voice students set goals with their teacher to work on sounding like their favorite recording artists, or if they prefer, to develop their own unique voice. We not only teach singers, but also actors or professional presenters who want to enhance their speaking voices.
(for ages seven and up)
Our songwriting and composition teachers focus on both popular and classical styles. If you have always wanted to create your own music (in any style) then we have the teachers who can help you achieve your dream. Songwriting students work on rhythm, melody, and harmony, as well as song structure and more. They also spend time working on arranging their tunes -- that is, figuring out how the band or other ensemble is actually going to create the sounds they hear in their heads. This can be the beginning of a life-long passion, so parents, be warned! :-)
(Songwriting lessons can be taken as a stand-alone course, or as an add-on to the student's other music instruction.)
(for ages seven and up)
GarageBand is the popular music-creation app that comes bundled with every new Apple desk- or laptop computer. If your child has discovered GarageBand and plays with it constantly, we can take the random-loops-thrown-together sound and help your child actually create music they'll be proud of and want to show off to their friends. You see, what they often don't tell you is that the music they created -- while they are pleased with it -- just isn't exactly working and the child can't figure out why. Our teachers know why, and they'll help your budding creator put the pieces together in ways that will amaze your child, their friends, and you.
(GarageBand lessons can be taken as a stand-alone course, or as an add-on to the student's other music instruction.)
AUDITION PREPARATION SERVICES
(for teens and up)
One of the benefits of living in Fairfield and Westchester Counties is the proximity to great arts programs. It also means that standards are high and competition is fierce. Whether you are auditioning for the middle- or high-school musical, for any of the many excellent local or regional theater groups, or competing to get into an excellent conservatory or university music program, being cool and well-prepared is key. In fact, it's the only factor over which you have any control. We are the only music school in Greenwich that offers audition preparation services for our students.
